When to choose another route: Compare SM when the main concern is organizational direction and governance, or MTT for developing and leading people. OTM is better matched to delivery relationships, reporting and operational decisions in a complex project context.

How the exam is weighted

The standard total duration is 135 minutes. The structure allocates a nominal 45 minutes to multiple choice and 90 minutes to essays. These are planning allocations, not a claim that separate hard timers apply. Use the official sample marking guidance to practice the essay component.
A chapter question distribution is not provided here. Do not copy the Advanced or Specialist exam format into an Expert preparation plan.

Entry requirements
For certification, ISTQB lists CTFL and Advanced Level Test Manager (CTAL-TM), a passed Expert examination, at least five years of practical testing experience and at least two years of industry experience in the Expert topic. Ask the provider how and when to submit evidence.

How to prepare
The suggestions below are our editorial advice, not ISTQB requirements.
- Map internal and external responsibilities before proposing a management action.
- Practice interpreting a report under uncertainty and asking for the missing evidence.
- Use examples to distinguish progress, product quality and confidence in a release decision.
- Write retrospective actions with an owner and a way to check whether they helped.
Try this study exercise
A project depends on a supplier component arriving late. Draft an operational response covering communication, contractual questions for the responsible owner, integration risks and revised test priorities. Write a release recommendation that separates known evidence from unresolved assumptions. Then propose a retrospective that could improve the next project rather than merely assign blame.
For the essay component, practice writing a structured response: the problem, relevant evidence, alternatives, your recommendation and its limitations. Review the reasoning against the official sample marking guidance, not simply the length of the answer.
A study plan with milestones
Use four passes through the material rather than a guaranteed number of weeks. The pace depends on your experience and available study time. This plan is our editorial recommendation, not an official course duration.

For each uncertain answer, record the learning objective, why your choice seemed plausible, the official explanation and the example you will use to check your understanding again. Revisit guesses even when they happened to be correct.

Common questions
Does a green status report settle a release decision?
No. Explain what the status measures, whether the evidence addresses the important risks and which assumptions remain unresolved. A status color is a summary, not the argument.
Can I use a supplier scenario for essay practice?
Yes. A fictional late or changed supplier component is useful for exploring relationships, integration risks and communication. Make the contractual and technical assumptions explicit.
How does OTM connect with the other CTEL-TM modules?
OTM concerns operational relationships and delivery decisions. SM addresses strategic direction and MTT addresses people leadership. All three are required for full CTEL-TM.
What should a retrospective recommendation include?
Tie the action to a demonstrated problem, state ownership and define how its effect will be checked. Avoid substituting a blame statement for a workable improvement.
Does the Expert certificate expire?
The official module page lists seven years of validity. Confirm extension or recertification arrangements with the issuing body. See the official extension policy in the sources below.
