ISTQB certification exams in one minute
ISTQB certification is a software testing qualification from the International Software Testing Qualifications Board, a non-profit association. ISTQB writes the syllabi and exam rules. Member boards and exam providers run the exams and issue the certificates.
ISTQB reports 1.5 million exams administered and more than 1.1 million certifications issued in over 130 countries, as of May 2025.
You start with CTFL, the Foundation Level exam. It has no prerequisites, and every other ISTQB certification requires it. The exam has 40 multiple-choice questions and 60 minutes. You need 26 points to pass.
| Level | Who it is for | What you need first | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foundation (CTFL) | Anyone learning the core vocabulary and techniques of software testing | Nothing | For life |
| Advanced | Test analysts, technical testers, test managers and automation engineers who work with the material in depth | CTFL, plus practical experience where the scheme defines it | For life |
| Specialist | One topic in depth, such as performance, security or AI testing | CTFL, and some topics add practical experience | For life |
| Expert | Senior test managers and people who lead test process improvement | The matching Advanced certificate, plus several years of experience | 7 years |
You book, sit and receive your certificate through a member board or exam provider, not through ISTQB directly. Fees and booking routes depend on your country, so check the exam cost guide and the country guides before you pay.
What is ISTQB?
ISTQB stands for International Software Testing Qualifications Board. It was founded in Edinburgh in November 2002 and is a non-profit association registered in Belgium. Its job is to define what testers should know, write the syllabi for each certification and set the rules every exam must follow.
ISTQB does not sell exams, run test centers or print certificates. That work is shared between several kinds of organizations, and knowing who does what saves you a lot of confusion later.
| Organization | What it does | When you deal with it |
|---|---|---|
| ISTQB | Writes syllabi, sample exams, the glossary and the exam rules | When you download study material from istqb.org |
| Member boards | National or regional boards (for example ASTQB in the US or the Indian Testing Board) that look after exam quality and accreditation in their area. Many also run exams | Often when you book, or when you need a certificate replaced |
| Exam providers | Organizations accredited to deliver exams, sometimes across many countries, including remote-proctored exams | When you buy a voucher, schedule an appointment and get your result |
| Accredited training providers | Companies whose courses are checked against the syllabus | Only if you choose to take a course |
One practical consequence: if you have a question about your booking, your result or your certificate, ISTQB will send you back to the organization that ran your exam. Keep their contact details from the moment you book.
What an ISTQB certificate proves (and what it does not)
A certificate shows that you passed an exam on a defined body of testing knowledge. For CTFL, that means you understand core testing concepts, can use the standard vocabulary and can apply basic test design techniques such as boundary value analysis and decision tables.
It does not prove that you can test a real product well, use a particular automation tool or lead a project. Employers know this. In practice, CTFL works best as a shared language and a baseline, combined with hands-on experience you can talk about in an interview.
How the certification scheme is organized
ISTQB qualifications sit on four levels. CTFL is the entry point for all of them.
| Level | What it covers | Current certifications | Validity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foundation | Core testing knowledge for everyone | 1 (CTFL v4.0) | Lifetime |
| Advanced | Deeper skills for test analysts, technical test analysts, test managers, Agile testers and automation engineers | 5 | Lifetime |
| Specialist | Focused topics such as AI testing, performance, security, mobile, automotive and games | 16 | Lifetime |
| Expert | Senior modules in test management and test process improvement, with essay questions | 5 modules | 7 years |
Counts come from our certification directory, checked against ISTQB’s catalog on October 4, 2026. Every Advanced, Specialist and Expert exam requires CTFL first. Expert modules also require years of practical experience.
Which certification should you take first?
CTFL, in almost every case. It is the only exam with no prerequisites, and nothing else is open to you until you pass it. After CTFL, choose by the work you do, not by the longest title. Our directory has suggested paths for test analysts, managers, Agile testers, automation engineers and AI testing.
CTFL: the exam you will take first
The Certified Tester Foundation Level, version 4.0, is a complete rewrite released on April 21, 2023. The current study document is v4.0.1, an errata release from September 15, 2024. The exam itself is still called CTFL v4.0.
Exam format
| Item | CTFL v4.0 |
|---|---|
| Questions | 40 multiple choice, one point each |
| Pass mark | 26 points (65%) |
| Time | 60 minutes, or 75 minutes with the approved 25% non-native language extension |
| Prerequisites | None |
| Validity | Lifetime |
| Delivery | Test center or remote-proctored online, depending on your provider |
Some questions ask you to choose two answers. There is no partial scoring, so you only get the point if every selected answer is right.
What the syllabus covers
| Chapter | Exam questions | Course training time |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Fundamentals of testing | 8 | 180 min |
| 2. Testing throughout the software development lifecycle | 6 | 130 min |
| 3. Static testing | 4 | 80 min |
| 4. Test analysis and design | 11 | 390 min |
| 5. Managing the test activities | 9 | 335 min |
| 6. Test tools | 2 | 20 min |
| Total | 40 | 1,135 min (18 hours 55 minutes) |
The exam mixes three cognitive levels: 8 questions test recall (K1), 24 test understanding (K2) and 8 ask you to apply a technique (K3). Most K3 questions come from chapter 4, where you work through equivalence partitioning, boundary value analysis, decision tables, state transitions, and statement and branch coverage. Our CTFL syllabus guide walks through each chapter.
Found older study material?
CTFL v4.0 is a complete rewrite of the earlier v3.1 syllabus, according to ISTQB. Chapter structure, terminology and examples changed. If a book, course or question bank does not say v4.0 (or v4.0.1), do not use it as your main source. Older certificates stay valid, but the exam you book today is v4.0.
How ISTQB exams work
Every Foundation, Advanced and Specialist exam follows the same core rules, set in ISTQB’s Exam Structures and Rules document:
- Multiple choice only. Each exam has at least 40 questions. Expert Level is the exception and adds essay questions.
- A 65% pass mark. On weighted exams you need 65% of the points, not 65% of the questions.
- Weighted questions above Foundation. At Advanced Level a K2 question is worth 1 point, a K3 question usually 2 and a K4 question 3. At CTFL every question is worth 1 point.
- Extra time for non-native speakers. If the exam is not in your native language, you can apply for 25% more time. Arrange it with your provider before exam day.
- Unlimited retakes. ISTQB lets you retake an exam as many times as you need. Your provider sets the fee and any waiting period.
- Results come from your provider. Your official result and certificate come from the provider that ran your exam.
How to book the CTFL exam
- Find a provider. Start with your country’s member board, or the official exam provider directory on istqb.org. In the US, ASTQB directs candidates to AT*SQA. In India, start with the Indian Testing Board.
- Check the exact exam. Make sure the provider offers CTFL v4.0 in your language and your delivery method, online or at a test center.
- Buy a voucher or package. Check whether a retake is included, when the voucher expires and what the cancellation rules are.
- Schedule the appointment. Buying a voucher and booking a time slot are often separate steps. For online exams, run the provider’s system check first.
- Request extra time if you qualify, before the appointment.
What does it cost? It depends on the provider and country. The USA guide shows a dated AT*SQA fee record, and our cost page compares more countries. The booking checklist lists what to confirm before you pay.
What happens on exam day
- Identity check. Bring the ID your provider accepts, and make sure the name matches your booking.
- Online exams. Most providers use a webcam, a check of your room and desk, and a secure browser. Follow your provider’s exact rules.
- Test centers. Arrive early and follow the center’s rules on what you can bring in.
- During the exam. Read every question for qualifiers such as “best”, “most likely” or “NOT”, and note when it asks for two answers.
Our exam day checklist covers ID, remote rules, extra time and what to do if something goes wrong.
How to prepare for CTFL
Free official materials
- The syllabus (v4.0.1). Every exam question maps to a learning objective in it.
- The ISTQB glossary. CTFL tests precise definitions, so learn the official wording.
- Four official sample exams (A to D), each with a separate answer file. Our sample exam guide explains how to use them without wasting them.
Self-study or a course?
Both work. ISTQB says no prior knowledge is required, and you can prepare with the syllabus and samples or take a three-day accredited course. A course gives you structure and someone to ask. Self-study costs less and suits people who already work in software and can keep a routine.
How long does it take?
The syllabus sets 18 hours and 55 minutes of training for accredited courses. Most self-study candidates need more than that because they also practice and review. Our suggestion: four weeks if you already test software, and six to eight weeks if you are new to testing. That is our editorial guidance, not an ISTQB rule. Our CTFL study plan breaks it down week by week.
Our readiness check
Before you book, take a fresh official sample under timed conditions. If you score comfortably above 26 out of 40 and can explain why each wrong option is wrong, you are probably ready. A score on a paper you have already seen proves very little.
Is ISTQB certification worth it?
It depends on what you want from it. Whether it is worth it depends on what you do with it.
Where it helps
- A shared language. Teams that use the same terms for test levels, techniques and defects waste less time in discussions.
- A hiring filter. Many testing job ads list ISTQB as required or preferred.
- A structured overview. For career changers, the CTFL syllabus is a compact map of the whole discipline.
- The entry ticket. You need CTFL for every other ISTQB certification.
Common criticisms
- Theory over practice. Passing CTFL does not mean you can test a product well.
- Memorization. Candidates who cram definitions can pass without deep understanding.
- Cost and commercialization. Exams and courses cost money, and the training market is large.
A 2026 study of practitioner views on arXiv summed it up this way: “ISTQB certifications provide recognizable career and communication value but remain contested in terms of practical utility.”
Our view: CTFL is worth it if you are entering testing, working in a market where employers ask for it, or planning an Advanced certification. Pair it with real project work. A certificate plus examples of how you used the techniques is far stronger than either one alone.
After the exam
- Your certificate comes from the member board or exam provider that ran your exam. ISTQB does not issue or replace certificates.
- Verification. You can choose to be listed in ISTQB’s Successful Candidate Register, which employers use to check certifications. Inclusion is voluntary.
- Validity. CTFL never expires, and new syllabus versions do not cancel older certificates. Older ISEB Foundation certificates are also recognized as equivalent.
- Next steps. Pick your next certification by the work you do. See the certification directory and our results and certificates guide.
Your first-timer checklist
- Read this page and the CTFL guide.
- Download the CTFL v4.0.1 syllabus, the glossary and the four sample exams from istqb.org.
- Take one sample untimed to see where you stand. Keep the other three fresh.
- Study chapter by chapter, spending the most time on chapters 4 and 5.
- Take a fresh sample under timed conditions. Review every wrong answer and every guess.
- Choose a provider, confirm CTFL v4.0 in your language, and check the price, retake and cancellation terms.
- Book the appointment, request extra time if you qualify, and run the system check for online exams.
- After you pass, keep your certificate details and decide whether to join the Successful Candidate Register.
