Use the official sample exam question and answer pair

ISTQB provides separate question and answer files for samples A, B, C and D. Download both parts of the same sample and check that their version labels match. Keep the answer file closed during your first attempt.

Sample files can be updated separately from the syllabus. The links above were checked on October 4, 2026. If a download changes or fails, use the official CTFL download page.

Treat the first attempt as a diagnostic

  • Use an untouched paper and remove your study notes.
  • Use the time allowance that your provider has approved for your actual exam.
  • Record answers and mark where you guessed or felt uncertain.
  • Read the requested number of answers and any qualifying wording carefully.
  • Score only after finishing. Then review the reasoning.

If you are still learning a technique, an untimed attempt can be useful. Label it as learning practice rather than a timed readiness check so you do not compare unlike results.

Review four kinds of result

01

Correct and explained

You can justify the answer and rule out the alternatives. Recheck the skill later with a new example.

02

Correct but guessed

The point counts in the sample score, but the skill needs work. Find what would distinguish the choices.

03

Wrong concept

Return to the relevant syllabus section. Explain the concept in your own words and make an example.

04

Wrong application or reading

Rework the steps, inputs and coverage. Identify any word you overlooked instead of blaming the whole topic.

For each error, record the learning objective, the mistaken assumption and a specific next exercise. Review the official explanation before using an informal forum answer or an AI-generated explanation.

A sample score is evidence, not a guarantee

Once you recognize the questions, a repeated score no longer measures the same thing. Keep at least one paper untouched until you have repaired your weak areas. Work new examples between papers rather than completing all four in one sitting.

A real appointment can add pressure, unfamiliar scenarios and practical constraints. Combine a fresh timed attempt with your syllabus checklist and booking readiness.

Use legitimate practice materials

Official sample exams illustrate the assessment. Avoid purported live exam dumps: you cannot rely on their accuracy, version or legitimacy, and memorizing answer letters does not build the skill being assessed.
