Make the next attempt count

Failing, retakes and rebooking

Read the provider’s terms, decide what to change, and confirm your syllabus is still available.

A retake is a new booking decision

If you did not pass, start with your provider’s terms: eligibility for another attempt, any waiting period, fees or package conditions, voucher expiry, and the exam version on offer.

A free-retake offer, a discount or a waiting period can apply to some candidates and not others. The provider, package, purchase date and delivery method all change the terms.

  • Ask whether your existing purchase includes another attempt.
  • Check whether the offer applies to your qualification and syllabus version.
  • Confirm any deadline for requesting and taking the retake.
  • If the appointment failed technically, ask about its recorded status before treating it as an ordinary failed attempt.

Use the result to find a specific gap

If a topic breakdown is available, use it as a starting point. Combine it with what you can still explain or apply without notes. Keep your review at the level of syllabus topics. Do not reconstruct or share live exam questions.

  • Knowledge: a concept or term was unfamiliar.
  • Application: you knew the concept but could not work the scenario.
  • Reading: you missed a qualifier or the requested number of answers.
  • Pacing: you spent too long on a small number of questions.
  • Preparation conditions: your practice did not reflect the real appointment.

Change what you practice

A new attempt is more useful after you have repaired the cause of mistakes. Choose a few weak learning objectives, work fresh examples and explain the reasoning. If your previous preparation was mainly reading, add recall and application.

For CTFL, use the study plan to schedule targeted sessions and the sample exam guide to protect at least one fresh readiness check.

Make the next step concrete

Instead of “revise more”, write a task you can check: “build a decision table from a new rule, identify the feasible combinations and select tests for the requested coverage.”

Check retirement dates before rebooking

Some sunset dates include retakes. Check that your version and language are still available on the date you plan to sit. A voucher does not extend a published retirement deadline.

If you move to a newer version, compare its syllabus and sample exams before you pay, and treat the new content as work to prepare for, not something the old material already covers.
