Is CTEL-TM-MTT the right certification for you?
Consider this module when your main responsibility is developing testers, leading teams and representing their contribution across the organization.
Use the module scope to choose what you need to improve. A module examination is one part of a wider Expert qualification. Check the completion requirements below.
When to choose another route: Choose MTT when people management and team development are central to your responsibilities. Compare SM for strategic governance or OTM for operational delivery. Technical expertise alone is not a substitute for examining the people and organizational conditions in a scenario.

| Multiple choice | 16 questions | 35 |
| Essays | Answer two of the three questions | 100 |
| Total | Pass at 88 points | 135 |
The standard total duration is 135 minutes. The structure allocates a nominal 45 minutes to multiple choice and 90 minutes to essays. These are planning allocations, not a claim that separate hard timers apply. Use the official sample marking guidance to practice the essay component.
A chapter question distribution is not provided here. Do not copy the Advanced or Specialist exam format into an Expert preparation plan.

What the syllabus covers
Use these module study areas to organize your reading. The practice prompts are our editorial guidance. Use the official learning objectives to check the required depth.
Study area 1: Team capabilities and roles
Define the capabilities and roles a team needs before proposing recruitment or reorganization. Consider the work and constraints rather than an idealized job-title list.
Study area 2: Developing and supporting people
Plan development using individual needs and useful feedback. Distinguish a skills gap from unclear expectations, workload or missing support.
Study area 3: Leadership and motivation
Compare ways to lead and motivate people under different conditions. Include distributed work and how the team can share information and learn.
Study area 4: Representing testing and ethical concerns
Represent the test team’s contribution across the organization. Explain the evidence, stakeholder needs and ethical concerns behind the message.

How to prepare
The suggestions below are our editorial advice, not ISTQB requirements.
- Practice distinguishing a skills gap from unclear expectations or an organizational constraint.
- Write examples of useful feedback tied to behavior and outcomes.
- Compare approaches to motivation and development under different team conditions.
- Prepare a reasoned response to an ethical concern involving pressure to conceal an unresolved risk.
Try this study exercise
A fictional team has strong technical skills but uneven workload and limited opportunities to learn. Draft a development plan using explicit goals, feedback and work allocation. Explain how you would support two people with different needs, assess progress fairly and communicate the team’s contribution without measuring people only by defect or test counts.
For the essay component, practice writing a structured response: the problem, relevant evidence, alternatives, your recommendation and its limitations. Review the reasoning against the official sample marking guidance, not simply the length of the answer.
A study plan with milestones
Use four passes through the material rather than a guaranteed number of weeks. The pace depends on your experience and available study time. This plan is our editorial recommendation, not an official course duration.
| Pass | Focus | Evidence of progress |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Orient | Read the learning objectives and Team capabilities and roles, Developing and supporting people | A chapter map with terms you can explain and objectives you cannot yet demonstrate. |
| 2. Apply | Leadership and motivation, Representing testing and ethical concerns | A test-team development proposal that addresses capability, fair expectations, feedback, stakeholder communication and an ethical concern. |
| 3. Diagnose | Take the matching official sample without looking at the answers | An error log separating missing knowledge, reasoning mistakes and rushed reading. |
| 4. Consolidate | Rework weak objectives and repeat the relevant exercises | A reasoned explanation of corrected answers, plus a confirmed exam version and booking checklist. |
For each uncertain answer, record the learning objective, why your choice seemed plausible, the official explanation and the example you will use to check your understanding again. Revisit guesses even when they happened to be correct.
Use the official sample exams
Take one sample under timed conditions before you open the answers, then review every guess as well as every wrong answer. Our sample exam guide shows how to turn a practice score into a study plan.
Before you book
Confirm the exam version, language and your eligibility with the provider before you pay. Use our booking checklist, the USA and India guides, and the exam day checklist.
Common questions
Is defect count a fair individual performance measure?
Not by itself. Examine context, task difficulty and incentives before using a number to assess a person. Practice selecting evidence that helps development rather than encouraging the easiest countable activity.
Does MTT include more than line management?
Yes. The module also considers representing testing across the organization, communication and ethical issues. Keep the wider stakeholder context visible in your preparation.
How many multiple-choice questions are in MTT?
The Expert rule document specifies 16, followed by two essays chosen from three. The other Expert modules have different multiple-choice counts, so do not copy their format.
Does this module complete CTEL-TM by itself?
No. Full CTEL-TM also requires Strategic Test Management and Operational Test Management. Plan the module pathway and evidence requirements with your provider.
Does the Expert certificate expire?
The official module page lists seven years of validity. Confirm extension or recertification arrangements with the issuing body. See the official extension policy in the sources below.
