Is CTAL-TTA the right certification for you?

Consider this qualification when you work close to code, interfaces and technical quality concerns, and want to justify tests using more than observed business behavior.

When to choose another route: If your immediate need is designing business-facing functional tests, compare CTAL-TA. If your gap is framework implementation and deployment, compare CTAL-TAE. Choose TTA when code-based reasoning and technical quality risks are central to your work.

How the exam is weighted

Question count and available points are different measures. Use the chapter allocation to set priorities, then check your own weak learning objectives. Every chapter remains examinable.

Entry requirements

CTFL and sufficient practical experience are required. Confirm the precise experience criteria and evidence with your board or exam provider. This guide does not invent a universal number of years.

What the syllabus covers

Open the detailed syllabus guide

Use these chapters to organize your reading. The practice prompts are our editorial guidance. Use the official learning objectives to check the required depth.

Chapter 1: The Technical Test Analyst’s Tasks in Risk-Based Testing

Take a technical risk and explain its likelihood, impact and implications for test selection. Keep an implementation concern separate from the observable quality risk it creates.

Chapter 2: White-Box Test Techniques

Trace decisions and compound conditions by hand. Demonstrate which inputs achieve a coverage goal, then identify the behavior that the measure alone cannot establish.

Chapter 3: Static and Dynamic Analysis

Compare a finding from static analysis with information available during execution. Explain the assumptions and false-positive risks before deciding how to investigate further.

Chapter 4: Quality Characteristics for Technical Testing

Choose a technical test approach for an explicit quality requirement. State workload, reliability or security assumptions instead of recommending the same tool for every situation.

Chapter 5: Reviews

Review a small technical work product using a purposeful checklist. Record a concrete concern and the evidence needed to decide whether it is a defect.

Chapter 6: Test Tools and Automation

Evaluate a tool against the intended test activity, environment and evidence. Distinguish automated execution from the analysis needed to interpret its output.

How to prepare

The suggestions below are our editorial advice, not ISTQB requirements.

  1. Trace code by hand before calculating or interpreting a coverage measure.
  2. Keep examples that distinguish a technical defect, its observable failure and its underlying cause.
  3. Connect a quality risk with a suitable analysis or test approach and a limitation of that approach.
  4. Practice explaining technical findings to someone who needs a release decision rather than a code walkthrough.

Try this study exercise

Write a short piece of pseudocode containing two decisions and a compound condition. Trace several inputs through it. Record which statements and outcomes each input exercises, identify a remaining gap, and explain why reaching a line of code is not enough to demonstrate every behavior of the condition.

A study plan with milestones

Use four passes through the material rather than a guaranteed number of weeks. The pace depends on your experience and available study time. This plan is our editorial recommendation, not an official course duration.

PassFocusEvidence of progress
1. OrientRead the learning objectives and The Technical Test Analyst’s Tasks in Risk-Based Testing, White-Box Test Techniques, Static and Dynamic AnalysisA chapter map with terms you can explain and objectives you cannot yet demonstrate.
2. ApplyQuality Characteristics for Technical Testing, Reviews, Test Tools and AutomationA technical test recommendation supported by a worked coverage example, a stated quality risk and a clear account of what the evidence does not prove.
3. DiagnoseTake the matching official sample without looking at the answersAn error log separating missing knowledge, reasoning mistakes and rushed reading.
4. ConsolidateRework weak objectives and repeat the relevant exercisesA reasoned explanation of corrected answers, plus a confirmed exam version and booking checklist.
Adjust the sequence and time using your error log. A practice result does not guarantee an exam result.

For each uncertain answer, record the learning objective, why your choice seemed plausible, the official explanation and the example you will use to check your understanding again. Revisit guesses even when they happened to be correct.

Use the official sample exams

Open the sample-exam walkthrough

Take one sample under timed conditions before you open the answers, then review every guess as well as every wrong answer. Our sample exam guide shows how to turn a practice score into a study plan.

Before you book

Confirm the exam version, language and your eligibility with the provider before you pay. Use our booking checklist, the USA and India guides, and the exam day checklist.

Common questions

Does high code coverage prove the software is correct?

No. Coverage shows which structural elements were exercised under a chosen measure. Your study examples should also examine expected results, missing conditions and risks outside that measure.

Do I need to write code during the exam?

This is a multiple-choice exam. Preparation still benefits from tracing pseudocode and understanding code structure. Do not confuse the absence of a live programming task with the absence of technical reasoning.

How is CTAL-TTA different from CTAL-TA?

TTA addresses technical analysis and structural testing. TA focuses more on business behavior and user needs. Compare the learning objectives with the responsibilities you actually want to develop.

Will learning one analysis tool cover the syllabus?

No. Tool familiarity is useful context, but you need to select and interpret approaches across the syllabus. Practice explaining the purpose, limitations and next investigation for a finding.
