CT-PT v1.0: Performance Testing

Consider this qualification when you need to design or interpret performance tests and explain results using realistic workloads and measures. Check the entry requirements below before you book.

Syllabus: ISTQB CT-PT Syllabus v1.0 2018. Exam facts checked: October 4, 2026

Is CT-PT the right certification for you?

Consider this qualification when you need to design or interpret performance tests and explain results using realistic workloads and measures.

When to choose another route: If you are only learning how to operate a load tool, pair that work with measurement fundamentals before setting an exam date. If you need broader technical testing rather than performance focus, compare CTAL-TTA.

These figures describe CT-PT v1.0. Use the listed point threshold, rather than assuming a fixed number of correct answers on a weighted exam.

How the exam is weighted

Question count and available points are different measures. Use the chapter allocation to set priorities, then check your own weak learning objectives. Every chapter remains examinable.

Start your planning with Performance Testing Tasks, which accounts for 20 of 40 questions. Give additional attention to difficult application and analysis objectives. Question share alone is not a personal study timetable.

Source discrepancy: the official qualification overview and the summary table give 90 minutes, while the detailed chapter table footer says 60. This guide uses 90 minutes and flags the discrepancy. Ask your provider to confirm the duration on your appointment.

Entry requirements

CTFL is required. Confirm which certificate evidence the provider accepts before purchasing or scheduling the exam.

What the syllabus covers

Use these chapters to organize your reading. The practice prompts are our editorial guidance. Use the official learning objectives to check the required depth.

Chapter 1: Basic Concepts

Distinguish the purpose of different performance investigations. State the failure or capacity question before selecting a workload or tool.

Chapter 2: Performance Measurement Fundamentals

Work through response-time and throughput observations with explicit units and aggregation. Ask what a single summary statistic might conceal.

Chapter 3: Performance Testing in the Software Lifecycle

Identify performance risks during design and delivery, not only before release. Explain what can be learned before a production-like environment exists.

Chapter 4: Performance Testing Tasks

Develop a workload, data and environment plan for one question. Interpret the result against the test conditions before recommending a system change.

Chapter 5: Tools

Evaluate tool suitability against the protocol, workload and measurements needed. Check the load-generation setup itself before blaming the application.

How to prepare

The suggestions below are our editorial advice, not ISTQB requirements.

  1. State workload assumptions before selecting a performance tool or interpreting a result.
  2. Practice reading measures together rather than relying on one number.
  3. Separate environmental limits from evidence of an application bottleneck.
  4. Write a short report containing the conditions, observations, limitations and recommended next investigation.

Try this study exercise

Imagine an appointment system with a morning booking rush. Define an invented workload, response-time objective and measurement window. Explain how you would choose test data and observe the system. Compare an average response time with a distribution of results, and describe why a fast test using an unrealistic workload would not settle the release question.

A study plan with milestones

Use four passes through the material rather than a guaranteed number of weeks. The pace depends on your experience and available study time. This plan is our editorial recommendation, not an official course duration.

PassFocusEvidence of progress
1. OrientRead the learning objectives and Basic Concepts, Performance Measurement FundamentalsA chapter map with terms you can explain and objectives you cannot yet demonstrate.
2. ApplyPerformance Testing in the Software Lifecycle, Performance Testing Tasks, ToolsA performance test proposal and short results report that state workload assumptions, measurements, limitations and a justified next investigation.
3. DiagnoseTake the matching official sample without looking at the answersAn error log separating missing knowledge, reasoning mistakes and rushed reading.
4. ConsolidateRework weak objectives and repeat the relevant exercisesA reasoned explanation of corrected answers, plus a confirmed exam version and booking checklist.
Adjust the sequence and time using your error log. A practice result does not guarantee an exam result.

For each uncertain answer, record the learning objective, why your choice seemed plausible, the official explanation and the example you will use to check your understanding again. Revisit guesses even when they happened to be correct.

Use the official sample exams

Take one sample under timed conditions before you open the answers, then review every guess as well as every wrong answer. Our sample exam guide shows how to turn a practice score into a study plan.

Before you book

Confirm the exam version, language and your eligibility with the provider before you pay. Use our booking checklist, the USA and India guides, and the exam day checklist.

Common questions

How long is the CT-PT exam?

The certification overview and summary exam table list 90 minutes. A footer in the detailed v1.19 chapter table says 60. This guide uses the agreeing overview and summary and recommends confirming the actual appointment with the provider.

Does an average response time describe every user’s experience?

No. Practice reading distributions and the conditions behind measurements. An average can hide slower cases that matter to a user or business objective.

How should I choose the test workload?

Start with the usage and risk assumptions relevant to your question. State arrival patterns, operations and data explicitly so another person can understand what the result does and does not represent.

Does a faster result prove an optimization worked?

Only after checking that the comparison uses suitable conditions and measurements. Changes in data, environment or workload can produce a faster result without demonstrating the intended improvement.
