CT-TAS v1.0: Test Automation Strategy
Consider this qualification when you decide where and why to automate, justify the investment or coordinate automation across projects and teams. Check the entry requirements below before you book.

Is CT-TAS the right certification for you?
Consider this qualification when you decide where and why to automate, justify the investment or coordinate automation across projects and teams.
When to choose another route: If you need to implement an automation architecture immediately, compare CTAL-TAE and develop the relevant engineering skills. TAS is better matched to investment, scope, ownership and organizational deployment decisions than to learning tool syntax.
Exam at a glance
40multiple-choice questions
49total available points
32 / 49minimum passing score in points
60 minstandard exam duration
These figures describe CT-TAS v1.0. Use the listed point threshold, rather than assuming a fixed number of correct answers on a weighted exam.

How the exam is weighted
Question count and available points are different measures. Use the chapter allocation to set priorities, then check your own weak learning objectives. Every chapter remains examinable.
| Syllabus chapter | Questions | Points | Question share |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Introduction and Objectives for Test Automation Strategy | 5 | 5 | 12.5% |
| 2. Test Automation Resources | 4 | 4 | 10% |
| 3. Preparing for Test Automation | 9 | 11 | 22.5% |
| 4. Organizational Deployment and Release Strategies for Test Automation | 10 | 10 | 25% |
| 5. Test Automation Impact Analysis | 7 | 12 | 17.5% |
| 6. Implementation and Improvement Strategies for Testing Automation | 5 | 7 | 12.5% |
| Total | 40 | 49 | 100% |
Start your planning with Organizational Deployment and Release Strategies for Test Automation, which accounts for 10 of 40 questions. Give additional attention to difficult application and analysis objectives. Question share alone is not a personal study timetable.

Entry requirements
CTFL and sufficient practical experience are required. Confirm the precise experience criteria and evidence with your board or exam provider. This guide does not invent a universal number of years.
Also known as: CT TAS, Test Automation Strategy, Certified Tester Test Automation Strategy.

What the syllabus covers
Use these chapters to organize your reading. The practice prompts are our editorial guidance. Use the official learning objectives to check the required depth.
Chapter 1: Introduction and Objectives for Test Automation Strategy
State the outcome an automation strategy should improve. Link success factors to evidence that a decision maker could actually use.
Chapter 2: Test Automation Resources
Build a resource and risk picture that includes continuing maintenance. Explain ownership and skills, not only the cost of initial implementation.
Chapter 3: Preparing for Test Automation
Choose where automation fits across test levels and lifecycle activities. Justify a small starting scope before proposing an organization-wide rollout.
Chapter 4: Organizational Deployment and Release Strategies for Test Automation
Map deployment dependencies such as environments, data and release coordination. Explain what a pilot must establish before expansion.
Chapter 5: Test Automation Impact Analysis
Compare investment with outcomes using transparent assumptions. Select measures that can reveal a weak investment rather than reward more test scripts.
Chapter 6: Implementation and Improvement Strategies for Testing Automation
Plan a transition from the current approach, with feedback and revision points. Make explicit which activities remain human-led and why.

How to prepare
The suggestions below are our editorial advice, not ISTQB requirements.
- Link an automation proposal to a specific quality or delivery objective.
- Keep initial investment and continuing maintenance costs separate in your examples.
- Practice choosing useful measures without rewarding only the number of automated tests.
- Compare a project-level decision with a policy that several teams would need to follow.
Try this study exercise
A team has funds for either faster regression checks or better test-data provisioning. Write a brief business case for each option using invented but explicit assumptions. Include ongoing maintenance, dependencies and a way to measure benefit. Explain what evidence would make you change your recommendation after a pilot.
A study plan with milestones
Use four passes through the material rather than a guaranteed number of weeks. The pace depends on your experience and available study time. This plan is our editorial recommendation, not an official course duration.
| Pass | Focus | Evidence of progress |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Orient | Read the learning objectives and Introduction and Objectives for Test Automation Strategy, Test Automation Resources, Preparing for Test Automation | A chapter map with terms you can explain and objectives you cannot yet demonstrate. |
| 2. Apply | Organizational Deployment and Release Strategies for Test Automation, Test Automation Impact Analysis, Implementation and Improvement Strategies for Testing Automation | An automation business case with scope, costs, ownership, deployment dependencies and a pilot evaluation that could change the recommendation. |
| 3. Diagnose | Take the matching official sample without looking at the answers | An error log separating missing knowledge, reasoning mistakes and rushed reading. |
| 4. Consolidate | Rework weak objectives and repeat the relevant exercises | A reasoned explanation of corrected answers, plus a confirmed exam version and booking checklist. |
For each uncertain answer, record the learning objective, why your choice seemed plausible, the official explanation and the example you will use to check your understanding again. Revisit guesses even when they happened to be correct.
Use the official sample exams
Take one sample under timed conditions before you open the answers, then review every guess as well as every wrong answer. Our sample exam guide shows how to turn a practice score into a study plan.
Before you book
Confirm the exam version, language and your eligibility with the provider before you pay. Use our booking checklist, the USA and India guides, and the exam day checklist.
Common questions
Is CT-TAS a prerequisite for CTAL-TAE?
The CTAL-TAE overview lists CTFL and sufficient practical experience, not CT-TAS. Choose the order by your work needs and verify provider eligibility separately.
Does a positive return-on-investment estimate settle the decision?
No. An estimate depends on assumptions about development, maintenance and benefit. Practice testing those assumptions and using a pilot to revise the case.
Should all manual regression tests become automated tests?
Not automatically. Evaluate each candidate’s value, repeatability, dependencies and maintenance cost. A transition plan should preserve investigations that add information automation cannot supply efficiently.
Can automation success be measured by script count?
Script count alone is weak evidence. Connect measures to the strategy’s objective, such as useful feedback, stability or reduced effort, and examine what the chosen measure can hide.
