CT-MBT v1.1: Model-Based Tester

Consider this qualification when you want to use explicit models to organize test design and generation, and understand how model choices affect coverage. Check the entry requirements below before you book.

Is CT-MBT the right certification for you?

Consider this qualification when you want to use explicit models to organize test design and generation, and understand how model choices affect coverage.

When to choose another route: Wait if you cannot yet create and explain a small model without a generator. If your current goal is general test design, compare CTAL-TA first. If the goal is framework implementation rather than model quality and selection criteria, compare CTAL-TAE.

How the exam is weighted

Question count and available points are different measures. Use the chapter allocation to set priorities, then check your own weak learning objectives. Every chapter remains examinable.

What the syllabus covers

Use these chapters to organize your reading. The practice prompts are our editorial guidance. Use the official learning objectives to check the required depth.

Chapter 1: Introduction to Model-Based Testing

Explain why a model is useful for a particular testing problem. Identify the artifacts and activities that connect it to the existing test process.

Chapter 2: MBT Modeling

Create a small model with explicit assumptions and omissions. Review its level of abstraction before treating generated tests as evidence about the real product.

Chapter 3: Selection Criteria for Test Case Generation

Apply two coverage-selection criteria to the same model. Show which tests differ and which behaviors remain outside each chosen criterion.

Chapter 4: MBT Test Implementation and Execution

Trace a model-derived test into executable actions and observations. Explain how adaptation can introduce errors even when the abstract test is reasonable.

Chapter 5: Evaluating and Deploying an MBT Approach

Evaluate a pilot using the costs of modeling, adaptation and maintenance. Judge benefit by useful evidence and changed decisions, not only generated test counts.

How to prepare

The suggestions below are our editorial advice, not ISTQB requirements.

  1. Build a small model before using a modeling or generation tool.
  2. Trace every generated test back to a model element and the selected coverage criterion.
  3. Record assumptions and omissions beside the model, not only in a separate report.
  4. Compare the effort of building and maintaining a model with the information it gives your team.

Try this study exercise

Model a reservation as states such as available, held, paid and canceled. Invent and label the allowed transitions, then propose tests that exercise them. Add an expiry rule and check what changes in the model and tests. State which real-world behaviors the model omits so that its apparent completeness is not mistaken for complete product coverage.

A study plan with milestones

Use four passes through the material rather than a guaranteed number of weeks. The pace depends on your experience and available study time. This plan is our editorial recommendation, not an official course duration.

PassFocusEvidence of progress
1. OrientRead the learning objectives and Introduction to Model-Based Testing, MBT ModelingA chapter map with terms you can explain and objectives you cannot yet demonstrate.
2. ApplySelection Criteria for Test Case Generation, MBT Test Implementation and Execution, Evaluating and Deploying an MBT ApproachA reviewed model, two justified coverage selections and a trace from abstract tests to executable observations.
3. DiagnoseTake the matching official sample without looking at the answersAn error log separating missing knowledge, reasoning mistakes and rushed reading.
4. ConsolidateRework weak objectives and repeat the relevant exercisesA reasoned explanation of corrected answers, plus a confirmed exam version and booking checklist.
Adjust the sequence and time using your error log. A practice result does not guarantee an exam result.

For each uncertain answer, record the learning objective, why your choice seemed plausible, the official explanation and the example you will use to check your understanding again. Revisit guesses even when they happened to be correct.

Use the official sample exams

Take one sample under timed conditions before you open the answers, then review every guess as well as every wrong answer. Our sample exam guide shows how to turn a practice score into a study plan.

Before you book

Confirm the exam version, language and your eligibility with the provider before you pay. Use our booking checklist, the USA and India guides, and the exam day checklist.

Common questions

Do I need a specific modeling tool for the exam?

Do not make a tool purchase your first preparation step. Use simple models to understand the concepts, then consult the syllabus and provider about any training environment they use.

Does a generated test set guarantee complete coverage?

Only coverage of the specified model under the selected criterion can be claimed. The model’s omissions and the gap between model and implementation still need investigation.

Is a state model the only form of model-based testing?

No. Use the syllabus to compare modeling approaches and their suitability. A state example is a convenient learning exercise, not a claim that every system should be modeled the same way.

How should I judge a model-based testing pilot?

Compare the useful evidence, maintenance effort and integration with existing work. A large generated suite is not automatically valuable if the model or expected observations are weak.
