Is CT-FT the right certification for you?
Consider this qualification when you test software in financial services and need to connect test decisions with domain risks, data and evidence requirements.
When to choose another route: If you do not yet understand the product’s financial rules, pair syllabus study with domain learning rather than memorizing regulatory names. Compare CTAL-TA for general business-facing test design or CT-SEC when security testing is the main skill gap.
Exam at a glance
40multiple-choice questions
45total available points
30 / 45minimum passing score in points

These figures describe CT-FT v1.0. Use the listed point threshold, rather than assuming a fixed number of correct answers on a weighted exam.

How the exam is weighted
Question count and available points are different measures. Use the chapter allocation to set priorities, then check your own weak learning objectives. Every chapter remains examinable.
| Syllabus chapter | Questions | Points | Question share |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Introduction to the Financial Services Industry | 6 | 6 | 15% |
| 2. Compliance Testing | 10 | 10 | 25% |
| 3. Risk-Based Testing | 5 | 5 | 12.5% |
| 4. Data Testing and Data Management | 6 | 8 | 15% |

| 6. Test Automation | 5 | 6 | 12.5% |
| Total | 40 | 45 | 100% |
Start your planning with Compliance Testing, which accounts for 10 of 40 questions. Give additional attention to difficult application and analysis objectives. Question share alone is not a personal study timetable.

What the syllabus covers
Use these chapters to organize your reading. The practice prompts are our editorial guidance. Use the official learning objectives to check the required depth.
Chapter 1: Introduction to the Financial Services Industry
Describe the financial business activity behind a software operation. Identify the stakeholders who can clarify rules and consequences.
Chapter 2: Compliance Testing
Connect a compliance requirement with an observable control and evidence. Mark questions that need a qualified business or compliance interpretation.
Chapter 3: Risk-Based Testing
Prioritize tests using explicit financial risks and consequences. Explain why two similar defects could merit different investigation priorities.
Chapter 4: Data Testing and Data Management
Create data accuracy and reconciliation examples across systems. Distinguish a missing record, timing difference and duplicate before recommending a correction.
Chapter 5: Functional and Non-Functional Testing
Connect functional and quality requirements to realistic financial scenarios. Make performance, availability and security assumptions explicit.
Chapter 6: Test Automation
Select automation that supports repeatable tests and useful evidence. Include data controls and review responsibilities in the proposal.

How to prepare
The suggestions below are our editorial advice, not ISTQB requirements.
- Connect each test condition to an explicitly stated business rule or risk.
- Practice explaining data discrepancies using examples rather than vague defect labels.
- Keep traceability from a requirement to test evidence and an unresolved issue.
- Discuss how automation can preserve useful evidence without hiding assumptions.
Try this study exercise
Invent two systems that record payments at different times. Define a reconciliation rule and examples for duplicate, missing and delayed records. Propose tests and evidence that would help a reviewer understand whether the rule is followed. State where a business or compliance specialist must clarify the requirement. Do not invent a regulation to fill the gap.
A study plan with milestones
Use four passes through the material rather than a guaranteed number of weeks. The pace depends on your experience and available study time. This plan is our editorial recommendation, not an official course duration.
| Pass | Focus | Evidence of progress |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Orient | Read the learning objectives and Introduction to the Financial Services Industry, Compliance Testing, Risk-Based Testing | A chapter map with terms you can explain and objectives you cannot yet demonstrate. |
| 2. Apply | Data Testing and Data Management, Functional and Non-Functional Testing, Test Automation | A finance-domain test pack with clarified business rules, reconciled data examples, risk priorities and traceable evidence requirements. |
| 3. Diagnose | Take the matching official sample without looking at the answers | An error log separating missing knowledge, reasoning mistakes and rushed reading. |
| 4. Consolidate | Rework weak objectives and repeat the relevant exercises | A reasoned explanation of corrected answers, plus a confirmed exam version and booking checklist. |
For each uncertain answer, record the learning objective, why your choice seemed plausible, the official explanation and the example you will use to check your understanding again. Revisit guesses even when they happened to be correct.
Use the official sample exams
Take one sample under timed conditions before you open the answers, then review every guess as well as every wrong answer. Our sample exam guide shows how to turn a practice score into a study plan.
Before you book
Confirm the exam version, language and your eligibility with the provider before you pay. Use our booking checklist, the USA and India guides, and the exam day checklist.
Common questions
Does CT-FT establish regulatory expertise for every country?
No. Use the qualification to improve testing knowledge, and consult the responsible specialists about the product’s actual regulatory obligations and interpretations.
Why is data reconciliation a testing concern?
A transaction can appear differently across systems because of timing, transformation or errors. Practice identifying the expected relationship and evidence needed to distinguish those explanations.
Do I need a finance degree?
The published certification prerequisite is CTFL. Domain knowledge still helps preparation and practical work. Confirm provider requirements without inventing an additional universal degree requirement.
Is audit evidence the same as a successful test result?
Not necessarily. Ask what requirement, control and decision the evidence must support. A result with no context or traceability may be insufficient for that purpose.
