What to confirm before booking your first ISTQB exam
Check the exam, eligibility, provider, delivery method and payment terms before you book.
Official facts checked October 9, 2026
Booking should confirm a decision you have already made. It shouldn’t be the moment you find out which syllabus version you are taking or how the appointment works. Collect the key details in writing before you pay, then keep them with your confirmation email.
ISTQB writes the syllabi and exam rules, but it doesn’t sell exams directly. Member boards and licensed exam providers handle dates, delivery, fees and booking. That means most of the details below come from your provider, so this checklist helps you ask the right questions.

Confirm the exact exam
Check four details on the booking screen and match them against the official qualification page:
| Detail | Example | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Full name and acronym | Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL) | Similar names belong to different exams. |
| Syllabus version | v4.0 | Older and newer versions have different content and sometimes a different format. |
| Exam language | English | Retirement dates and extra time depend on language. |
| Delivery method | Remote proctored or test center | Each has its own technical and identity rules. |
Don’t rely on a broad label such as “Foundation” if the version isn’t shown. If the booking description and the official CTFL page don’t match, ask the provider which exam you will receive before you pay.
Check that you are eligible
Being ready and being eligible are different questions. ISTQB says CTFL has no prerequisites, and CTFL is a prerequisite for every other certification. Higher levels add more:
| Level | Entry requirement |
|---|---|
| Foundation (CTFL) | None. |
| Specialist | CTFL, with any additional prerequisites specified for the qualification. For example, CT-ATLaS needs CTFL v4.0, or an older CTFL plus CTFL-AT. Recommended experience is a separate consideration. |
| Advanced (CTAL-TA, TTA, TM, TAE) | CTFL plus sufficient practical experience. Your member board or exam provider sets the specific criteria. |
| Advanced Agile Tester (CTAL-AT v2.0) | CTFL, any version. Agile testing experience is strongly recommended but isn’t a formal requirement. |
| Expert | Hold the prerequisite certificate, not just syllabus knowledge. Current Expert pages list CTFL and CTAL-TM; obtaining certification also requires the Expert assessment and five years of testing experience plus two in the topic. Confirm the entry and award process with your issuer. |
If you are booking an Advanced exam, ask the provider how it checks your certificate and experience before you buy the appointment. Our certification directory lists the requirements for each exam.
Find out who manages your booking
Identify the organization that takes your payment and runs your appointment. Save its support contact. This might be your national member board, an exam provider licensed by that board or an international provider that serves your country.
Our member boards page lists all 71 boards and explains how to find a provider. The USA guide and India guide cover those countries in detail. Terms for one provider don’t carry over to another, so check each one.
Check the delivery method
| Check | Remote proctored | Test center |
|---|---|---|
| Equipment | A computer, browser, webcam and microphone that pass the provider’s system check. | Provided by the center. |
| Location | A quiet private room that meets the provider’s rules. | The center’s address and opening time. |
| Network | A stable connection. Run the system check on the same network you will use. | Not your concern. |
| Arrival | Log in early for check-in and room scan. | Arrive early with your ID. |
| Breaks and materials | Usually strict. Read the provider’s rules. | Follow the center’s rules. |
Run the provider’s system check on the exact device and connection you will use on exam day. A work laptop with locked settings or a company VPN can fail the check. Our exam day guide lists the questions to settle beforehand.
Match your name and ID
Ask which identity documents the provider accepts and how your name must appear on the registration. A mismatch between your booking name and your ID is one of the easiest problems to prevent and one of the hardest to fix at check-in.
- Use your name exactly as it appears on your ID.
- Check the ID won’t expire before your exam date.
- Fix any mismatch with the provider before you book, not on the day.
Your certificate usually shows the name from your registration, so getting it right also saves a correction later.
Apply for extra time or accommodations early
ISTQB says that if the exam is in a language that isn’t your first language, you can apply for a time extension of 25% of the usual exam length. For CTFL, that takes the exam from 60 to 75 minutes.
The word that matters is apply. Ask the provider how to request it, what evidence it needs and whether the extension will show on your appointment. Don’t assume the booking system adds it automatically.
If you need other accommodations, contact the provider before you choose a date. Ask about its process and how much notice it needs. The right arrangement depends on your request and the provider’s policy.
Read the payment and change terms
Check the total amount and currency at checkout, including taxes and booking charges, and what the payment covers. If a course bundle includes a voucher, ask:
- Which exam and version is the voucher for?
- How long is it valid, and how do you redeem it?
- Is a retake included?
- Can you use it for remote and test center delivery?
Then read the cancellation, rescheduling, no-show and retake terms. Ask which deadline and time zone apply to changes and keep a dated copy.
A booking mistake you can avoid
If your appointment shows as 10:00, write down the time zone with it. Convert it to your local time and check the confirmation email. A time without a time zone is incomplete, and it is an easy way to miss an exam you paid for.
Plan for a possible retake
ISTQB says you can take its exams as many times as you need to pass. Your provider sets the retake fee, any waiting period and how rebooking works. Ask about these before your first attempt, not after.
If your exam version is retiring, don’t book your first attempt right before the final date. A retiring version’s last date covers exams, but your provider may not have slots left near the end. Leave room for a second attempt. Our retakes guide covers the details.
Decide when you are ready to book
A booked date motivates many candidates, but booking too early adds pressure without adding skill. These signals suggest you are ready:
- You can explain every learning objective in your own words.
- You score comfortably above 26 out of 40 on an official sample set you haven’t seen before.
- You finish that sample within 60 minutes, or 75 with the language extension.
- You can explain why your wrong answers were wrong.
If you aren’t there yet, set a target date two to four weeks out and book once your next unseen sample passes the check. This is our editorial guidance. No practice score guarantees a pass.
Common booking mistakes
These problems come up again and again. Each one is easy to prevent before you pay.
| Mistake | How to prevent it |
|---|---|
| Booking the wrong version, such as a retiring syllabus | Match the version on the booking screen with the official page. |
| Name on the booking doesn’t match your ID | Copy your name exactly from your ID. |
| Forgetting to apply for the language extension | Ask the provider how to apply when you book, not on exam day. |
| Remote exam fails the system check on the day | Run the check on the same device and network a few days before. |
| Missing the appointment because of a time zone mix-up | Write the time zone next to the time and convert it to local time. |
| Voucher expires before you are ready | Check the validity period and set a reminder. |
| Booking the last slot before a sunset date | Leave room for a retake. |
Make a final booking record
- Exact qualification, syllabus version and exam language.
- Provider name, support contact and accepted ID.
- Delivery method, date, time and time zone, and check-in instructions.
- Confirmed extra time or accommodations, if any.
- Total price, what it includes, and the cancellation, rescheduling and retake terms.
- Confirmation reference and copies of the provider’s instructions.
You don’t need an answer to every possible scenario before you book. Focus on the details that decide your eligibility, the exam you are buying and your ability to attend. A precise question with your booking details gets a faster answer than a general request for “all the rules”. Next, read our booking guide for the full process.
Common questions about first ISTQB exam

No. ISTQB says CTFL has no prerequisites. You can book it without a course, a degree or work experience. CTFL is a prerequisite for every other ISTQB certification.
Can I get extra time if English isn’t my first language?
Yes, you can apply for it. ISTQB allows a time extension of 25% of the usual exam length when the exam is not in your first language. For CTFL that means 75 minutes instead of 60. Ask your provider how to apply.
Who do I book an ISTQB exam with?
With your national member board or a licensed exam provider. ISTQB directs candidates to them for exam dates, delivery options, fees and booking.
How many times can I retake an ISTQB exam?
ISTQB says you can take its exams as many times as you need to pass. Your provider sets retake fees and any waiting rules.
Should I choose remote proctoring or a test center?
Choose remote if you have a quiet private room and equipment that passes the provider’s system check. Choose a test center if your home setup is unreliable or you prefer a controlled room.
Who gives me my exam result?
Your member board or exam provider gives you the result, not ISTQB directly.
