Provider and location
ISTQB vs BCS: which route should you take?
BCS is not a rival scheme to ISTQB. It is one of the organizations that offers ISTQB-scheme exams, so the real choice is usually about where you sit the exam, how you train and what your employer accepts.
BCS page details checked October 11, 2026. Route choices are our own editorial guidance.
What each organization does
ISTQB writes the syllabi and sets the exam rules for the scheme. It does not sell exams directly. ISTQB member boards and licensed exam providers run the exams, and training providers deliver courses. BCS is one of the organizations that offers ISTQB-scheme exams and training in the UK, alongside other providers listed in our country guides.
BCS also describes its software testing certification as being in collaboration with ISTQB. Its pages say its Advanced exams are based on the ISTQB syllabus, and that the Foundation Level certification is required before the Advanced papers.
Is a BCS certificate an ISTQB certificate?
For the ISTQB-scheme exams, the answer is yes. BCS presents them as ISTQB certifications, and its Advanced Test Manager page says that when you achieve the certificate you can appear on the ISTQB Successful Candidate Register. That is the same register every ISTQB certificate can join.
BCS also sells its own Intermediate Certificate in Software Testing. It is not an ISTQB level. If a job post asks for an ISTQB certificate, a BCS Intermediate certificate does not meet that request, so check the exact name before you book.
Where the choice actually matters
| Question | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Syllabus version | Which syllabus version the exam uses, for example CTFL v4.0 | Older and newer versions can differ, and employers may ask for a specific one |
| Delivery | Test centre, remote proctoring or both, and the equipment rules | Remote routes have their own setup steps and room rules |
| Training | Whether training is required or recommended, and the price and format | BCS pages recommend training with a BCS accredited provider. Prices vary by provider. |
| Self-study | Whether the route offers an exam-only option | Exam-only routes suit people who can study alone. BCS notes that its Advanced Test Manager exam-only route usually takes a minimum of 35 hours of preparation. |
| Register | Whether the certificate appears on the ISTQB Successful Candidate Register | Employers use the register to verify certificates |
| Language and time zone | The exam language and the appointment times on offer | Late appointments and extra time requests can add cost and stress |
| Employer | What your target employers name in job posts | The name in the post matters more than the brand of the route |
Check before you book
- Write down the exact certification and version your employer or target job asks for.
- Ask the provider to confirm, in writing, that the exam is in the ISTQB scheme and the version you need.
- Compare total cost, including any training, the exam fee and any retake or rescheduling charges. The exam cost and fees page explains what to include.
- Confirm where the certificate is issued from and whether it is listed on the Successful Candidate Register.
- Read the provider’s cancellation and retake terms before you pay, and keep a copy of your confirmation.
What to avoid
Be cautious of any route that names a certificate you cannot confirm on the ISTQB scheme, or that promises a pass or a job. Ask for the exam name, version and issuer in writing, and check them against the official pages before you pay.
Common questions about ISTQB and BCS
Is a BCS ISTQB certificate the same as an ISTQB certificate?
BCS presents its ISTQB-scheme exams as ISTQB certifications, and candidates who pass can appear on the ISTQB Successful Candidate Register. BCS also sells its own Intermediate Certificate, which is not an ISTQB level. Check which one an employer means.
Is BCS cheaper than other routes?
Not necessarily. BCS says course prices depend on the training provider and course format. Compare the total cost of the exam, any training and your time, not the headline fee.
Do I need BCS to take an ISTQB exam in the UK?
No. Several providers offer ISTQB exams in the UK. Our country guides list the routes we have verified, and each one sets its own terms.
Which should I choose if my employer names BCS?
Take the route your employer names, and confirm the exam, version and certificate type they need before you pay. A job post that names BCS is a good reason to check the details, not to assume they match.
