Syllabus v3.0, Sources checked October 5, 2026. Independent study guidance

Start with the current official CTAL-TM syllabus

Make defensible decisions about testing priorities, evidence, resources and people.

Download the official CTAL-TM syllabus v3.0 (PDF). Keep its version with your notes and use the learning objectives as your coverage checklist. This guide helps you organize practice. The official document defines the examinable content.

The current exam rules list 50 questions, 88 points and a pass mark of 58 for CTAL-TM v3.0. Sample-file instructions and document versions must still be checked separately. An older sample’s score is not the booking specification. Read the exam overview and entry requirements.

A practical map of the syllabus

Each chapter below has a task you can produce and review. These tasks are our study suggestions. The minutes are the syllabus’s minimum accredited teaching times, not exam question counts, exam weights or a required self-study timetable.

Chapter 1: directing the testing work

Minimum accredited teaching time: 750 minutes. Practice: Write a project test approach from stated risks and constraints. Add monitoring measures, a control decision and a completion report. Explain how a change in the delivery context changes your plan.

Chapter 2: managing product evidence

Minimum accredited teaching time: 390 minutes. Practice: Estimate the work for a small release using explicit assumptions. Define a defect workflow, distinguish estimates from commitments and show which evidence a release decision maker still needs.

Chapter 3: developing and supporting the team

Minimum accredited teaching time: 225 minutes. Practice: Map the skills needed for your plan against an invented team. Compare pairing, training and recruitment as ways to close a gap. Write a short business case with costs, expected benefits and uncertainty.

Read every chapter. Allocate additional practice where you struggle to apply or analyze, even if the teaching time is short. A long chapter deserves attention, but its length alone does not tell you how many exam points it carries.

Use the learning objectives to test your understanding

  • For each objective, record its identifier and knowledge level alongside a small example you can explain without the PDF.
  • For an understanding objective, compare related ideas and explain a limitation rather than copying a definition.
  • For an application objective, show your working: inputs, assumptions, technique and result.
  • For an analysis objective, compare plausible options against the actual constraints and explain why one fits better.
  • Mark an objective as secure only when you can answer a changed example. Highlighting a paragraph or recognizing a sample answer is not enough.

Keep the full official objective list in view. This article does not replace it. When a sample answer cites an objective, return to that section, repair the gap and create a new example.

Check whether you can transfer the learning

Choose one task from the chapter map and complete it without copying a worked answer. Write down the context, your assumptions, the result and a limitation. Change one constraint and explain which part of your reasoning must change. If the answer stays identical, check whether you have actually used the new constraint.

For a worked Test Management example and a fresh variation, use the independent practice prompt in the sample-exam guide. It is separate from the official question files and has no official point allocation.

What to do next

Turn your objective checklist into the CTAL-TM study plan, then use the official sample-exam guide to check reasoning and timing. Use the country guides for booking and provider-specific fees.
